As many of you may have noticed, we are not taking part in the upcoming mini cup competition involving fellow league rivals Slough, Solent, MK Thunder and another team TBC.
Firstly we appreciate that many of our supporters are looking forward to seeing us back on the ice, not least to finally lift the league championship trophy from the 2019/20 season. We are looking forward to seeing you all at the rink as soon as its safe to do so - and the players are desperate to be out there too.
To be transparent with our fans, there are two reasons why we are not competing in the mini-series:
1) We were previously asked to apply for funding by the governing body as part of the government Covid relief. We completed the first round of admin however it then became clear that this funding would either be a loan or a grant with the latter not a guarantee. We have worked extremely hard to build up the club slowly through a turbulent period over the last ten years or so, so opted not to risk taking out a loan and accrue the associated debts, to play a mini series of games behind closed doors. As a result of not applying for funding we were not initially invited to play in the series and although we have since been given the option to do so, the timescales are not realistic, not least because...
2) Streatham ice rink is currently unavailable and we have not yet been given a date of re-opening so if we did opt into the series we may well not have any home ice available to either train or play games.
We know this is a particularly difficult time for everyone and that our sport is doing its best to get going again in unprecedented times, but as you can see, returning to play at this time is not straightforward. We wish the four clubs competing in the tournament all the best and we hope to return to action soon.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
