Streatham Captain Michael Farn was a happy man today after it was announced that the league title would indeed be heading to South London as many had expected it would be.
With just one defeat all season and the NIHL South Cup already in the bag, the RedHawks were rocked last weekend when needing just one more win to celebrate a league title on the ice, four games ahead of schedule.
Both opponents Solent and Chelmsford pulled out of games due to concerns around covid-19 thus leaving the governing body with a decision to make. The EIHA had mandated all games go ahead last weekend on government guidance, and with Streatham willing to play both fixtures, the results have now been posted in
Streatham’s favour confirming a first league title win since 1982.
Everyone was hoping for a trophy lift on the ice as other clubs managed last weekend in their respective leagues but it wasn’t to be.
Captain Farn is relieved that although he and his team mates didn't get their moment, the right decision was taken:
“Obviously we are over the moon to finally hear the news today” he said.
“Up there with other honours it’s a great achievement to go through a league campaign with only one defeat all year no matter what level you are playing at.
“You can see in recent weeks the games have been close and we’ve had to battle with injuries and suspensions and the whole squad have played their part. We were doing everything we could do get over the line and I don’t think anyone can dispute we are worthy winners.
“I’m proud of all the lads and I’m sure we’ll get a chance to celebrate on the ice as soon as we can.”
