Streatham Fight Back To Victory

Match Report by Chris Beal

The Streatham RedHawks secured a vital 3 points in their quest to unseat the Slough Jets at the head of the table on Sunday. With a 5-2 win over the visiting Romford Buccaneers.

The opening period would see Streatham hammering the Romford net, with chance after chance. But Sonny Phillips, and the Buccaneers defence would block the shooting and passing lanes. Making it hard for Streatham to find solid goal scoring chances.

Then at 19 minutes Phillips shutout broke as Luke Brittle opened the scoring for the RedHawks sending them into the first break up 1-0

2 Minutes into the 2nd period however the Buccaneers would answer back at 2216. Nathan Williams netting the equalizer.

A minute later at 23 minuets a powerplay opportunity would allow Elliot Dervish to put the buccaneers ahead 2-1

Despite sustained Streatham pressure, and 2 goals washed out by the officials. One after Ryan Watt was deemed to have cross checked a Buccaneers defender during the play and a second, as no one could be certain it had crossed the line under a pile of bodies. The score remained 2-1 Romford as the teams headed to the locker rooms for the 2nd break

Phillips would do all he could to frustrate the Streatham offence for the opening 6 minutes of the third. But a Powerplay would gift Ryan Watt the extra space needed to snipe a shot over the shoulder of Phillips to tie the game.

Streatham would continue to apply pressure till another powerplay at 5139 would allow Danny Ingoldsby to put the hosts ahead by 1.

A powerplay for the Buccaneers would allow Streatham to extend the lead to 4-2 at 53 minutes. Ziggy Beesley’s interception releasing Ingoldsby in one on one with former Redhawk Callumn Burnett. Ingoldsby would use Burnett as a screen to fire it by Phillips and extend the lead

JJ Pitchley would then put the exclamation mark on the comeback as at 55 minutes he would collect a pass from Ingoldsby Infront and fire it across the line. To finalize the score Streatham 5 – 2 Romford

Post-game Coach Ben Paynter acknowledged the team had played a game of 2 halves.

“It was a game of 2 halves really. I really liked our first 10 minutes, not so much the next 10 or the 2nd period as whole. But in the third, down by a goal, backs to the wall. We turned it on and got the job done. We’re a good team, and we’re difficult to defend against, especially when we’re pushing and pushing. They did well to keep us to the outside. But soon as we got that goal, I think they knew that once we got that equalizer we were away.”

Up next on the High Road, Streatham welcome the Cardiff Fire in a re-arranged game after the original attempt was called off by storm Darragh back in December. Facing off at 17:30pm on the High Road.
