SUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2024
Streatham sink Buccaneers
Match Report by Chris Beal
Streatham RedHawks continued their winning start to the season on Saturday with a 7-1 win on the High Road over the visiting Romford Buccaneers.
Streatham had bolstered its options in net in the week, welcoming academy graduate Brett Shepherd back to the club from the Berkshire Bee’s. And handing the 24-year-old shot stopper the start against Romford.
The opening frame would be a cagey and physical affair with both sides playing the body heavily, and trying to find a way to break the deadlock.
It would take Streatham 10 minutes to do so, as Ryan Watt would net the first of his 2 goals on the night. The period would end Streatham 1-0 Romford
Streatham would extend the lead 2 minutes into the 2nd period. Harvey Stead adding to the impressive tally of goals he has netted to open the season.
Steads defensive partner Brendan Baird would then add Streatham’s 3rd of the game at 24 minutes.
Romford would claw a goal back at 29 minutes, as Donald Campbell would score for the visitors.
But the hosts would restore the 3-goal advantage at 33 minutes, Danny Ingoldsby netting his 5th of the season to put Streatham up 4-1.
George Norcliffe would score next, his first on home ice at 3833 to further extend the lead to 5-1 in favour of the hosts.
The third period would see Streatham further extend the lead and put the game beyond the Buccaneers. But it would take nearly half the period before JJ Pitchley scored with an emphatic shot to make it 6-1 Streatham at 49 minutes.
At 54 minutes, captain Ryan Watt would score the 7th and final Streatham goal, and put the final touch on a night that had seen the RedHawks captain score his 600th point in league play.
After the game coach Paynter was pleased with the result of a tough game.
“We we’re good considering we’d had a weekend off last week. That Romford team are good, they have a good team and several key guys who skate well. We identified those players and what we wanted to do against those players and executed that well. Our tempo was good throughout, and I’m pleased with our performance overall. They’re a hard-working team, they battle and get stuck in.
So it’s nice to play a team that wants to be there, and is hard to play against.
But ultimately I think we outplayed them in key areas and got the job done.”
The teams unbeaten start to the season came to an end last Sunday with a 5-2 loss in Chelmsford, George Norcliffe adding another to his tally and collecting man of the match for the RedHawks. The team will hope to get back to winning ways this weekend with a visit to Slough last night, before this evening as we renew rivalries with the Solent Devils.
