Johnston hoping for lucky 13

Streatham are delighted to announce the return of club Captain Joe Johnston for the 2016/17 season.

The 36 year old Streatham legend first appeared for the senior team as a fresh faced teenager in 1993 and will wear the number 17 jersey for the 13th season this campaign.

He may be advancing in age but Joe stepped up to the plate again last season leading the first line and scoring goals at vital times. He missed only two games all season and put the injury riddled previous campaign behind him notching 17 goals and 12 assists.

A former junior GB international and long time fans favourite, Joe is our first announcement of the upcoming season.

‘Joe is Mr Streatham’ said Coach Nick Chinn on his signing.

‘The club wouldn’t be the same without him and every team and coach needs a player like him’

‘Joe has captained the team for the last four years since returning from a break, and we will need him off the ice as much as on it, to help gel the team together.’

Born in London and a former Streatham and Guildford junior Joe takes to the ice this year motivated and ready for another challenge.

‘As always I'm honoured and privileged to be back for another season and to lead the team as captain once again. It's exciting times on the High Road and there's lots going on around the club.’

‘It's all about progression and if you look at where we are now as an organisation things have really moved forward from a few years ago. Warren deserves a lot of credit for that and I'm sure Chinny will push us on to the next level.’

‘Chinny really has seen and done it all but of course this is his first proper coaching job. He'll no doubt need a bit of help and support here and there and like the rest of the team I'll always be available when required.’

‘We're putting a great squad together again and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. If we can work on our consistency we'll be there or thereabouts.’

‘Last season was great for me on a personal level and it was pleasing to score lots of goals as that was an area I worked hard to improve on. I'll be trying to continue that in to the next campaign but I'm pretty versatile these days so I'll play whatever role the coach decides. It's about doing the best for the team and we all have to play a part in that to be successful. ‘

‘The ultimate goal is always to win something. Each year we're getting closer and there is no reason that this season should be any different.’

‘In recent history we've been starved of silverware and the dream is to deliver something to the loyal and passionate fan base we have, and I include myself in that. Hockey at Streatham has rarely been in such a good position and it's time to push harder on the ice to win something.’

‘The passion for the club I love so much has never been more ferocious than it is right now and I can't wait to hear the crowd roar and feel the atmosphere again at the first puck drop in September.’

You can sponsor the famous number 17 jersey with our own and loan scheme. You get your name on the back of the home or away jersey and at the end of the season you get to keep it!

Due to the popularity of these jerseys last season we are going to take all requests over the next two days and put them in a hat with the winner drawn out at random. If you are interested in sponsoring a jersey for £100, please email
