Mahoney on the blue again

Streatham can reveal the latest returnee to the squad as defenseman Adam Mahoney returns for the 2015/16 season.

The 26 year old Basingstoke born blue liner enters his fifth season in Streatham colours and has become a key figure on the top two lines in his time here.

Adam has partnered Dom Hopkins on the blue line for most of his time under the coaching of Warren Rost and is now settled in South London. Mahoney also picked up the Defenceman of the Year award at last season’s Streatham Redskins End of Season Awards night.

Adam also famously starred in a Swedish hockey advert for Ladbrokes and was allegedly named as ‘Best looking Player’ by a group of fans a couple of years ago*.

Before he headed across to the capital, Mahoney played his junior hockey out in the Home Counties with Basingstoke. After progressing through the ranks he broke into the senior ENL team Basingstoke Buffalo in 2004 as a teenager, but upon reaching the age of 18 walked away from the game.

In 2011 he started skating again and joined up with a Streatham team coached by Barry Spours. It didn’t take him long to pick up the bug again and he has been a regular ever since, breaking the 100 games barrier for the club last season.

Rumours that Mahoney would not ice this season stemmed from a wild statement made towards the end of last year when, sat on 0+9 in the statistics, Mahoney publically declared that if he was the only player not to score by the end of the year he would hang up the skates.

When fellow defenseman David Carr (also stuck on 0 goals at the time) scored in the final league game of the season at Invicta, all celebrated aside from poor Mahoney who had to decide upon a life away from hockey or an embarrassing climb down from his promise.

Thankfully he has swallowed his pride and as a quiet but effective presence in the squad, Adam brings agility and positional sense to the blue line and he is a welcome addition to the team again this season.

“Adam has become one of the best defenseman in the league over the last few seasons” said Coach Warren Rost.

“He does all the little things that often go unnoticed, by anyone except the coach, very well.  No fuss, no complaints just attention to detail in our end”

“This gives us a really good set of defensive corps this season which is important foundation for any success.  Having Adam back also gives our penalty kill a big boost and I imagine this will be crucial next season as we may have to kill the odd penalty from time to time.”
